Seventh generation BMW 5-series officially unveiled

BMW went for an evolution rather than a revolution with the seventh (!) 5 series, a model freshly launched today.

The brand did their best to keep the new BMW 5-series a secret but just inches from the finish line, yesterday, the car leaked. We now have the full press release and it suggests what what suspected all along; the G30 generation of the fünfer is an evolution of the model rather than a revolution. It is noteworthy that this is only the second of the seven generations to do so.So what is new in the new BMW 5 series? Well, a lot actually. First up are the car's dimensions, it has grown even bigger and now strechtes nearly 5 meters in length. It now measures 4.935 mm in length, 1.868 mm in width and 1.466 mm in height. Those millimeters in growth might not seem much but the brand states that the interior dimension benefits greatly from this growth. What also benefits from this new shape is the cars Cw-value, it is the most aerodynamically efficient BMW to date.As expected the new 5 series is a down right tech-fest. The car can be equipped with a list of options that overshadows even books like the bible. Remember that smartphone-like key from the 7-series? It's got it. Need your hands of the wheel on the freeway? It can do it. Need a massage or different smells in the car? It can. The car also comes with LED up front as standard. But the fun doesn't stop in the interior.

As with any BMW, the way it drives is one of the most important things. The new BMW 5-series aims more at comfort than ever but with the option M-undercarriage, the drive will be as sporty as ever. Or will it? As BMW now offers an optional all-wheel-steering system that also works with AWD. Also aiding the driving experience is the Dynamic Damper Control, a system that adjust the dampers constantly to offer an even smoother ride.Last on the list are of course the engines. Depending on where you live, BMW will offer a wide variety of engines that will only grow in the future. Petrol ranges from the 530i all the way up to the 550i X-Drive. Diesel ranges from the 520d up to the 530d. Hybrid comes only as an 530e, a PHEV. Engines still due are the flagship M5 engine and for the diesel the M550D will make an appearance. This time with a quad-turbo.No word on prices right now but the cars will start being delivered in the second quarter of 2017.
