2025 BMW iX2 xDrive30, right to exist?

BMW

You’re in the market for an electric vehicle. You have tons of options! You could go American or Asian, but you really want something European. No problem, you can buy something out of France or the UK. Do you really want something German? No problem, good choice. You can go to Porsche, Audi, Mercedes or Volkswagen. Do you want something from BMW? No problem, you can have an iX1, i4, iX3 or an iX. No, you want something different? Well, this is the car for you!

So, what is this?

BMW offers the X2, a small SUV/crossover with a coupe silhouette on the X1 chassis. Look at it as a small X4, which is a small X6. Okay, now you know what the X2 is. The iX2 is the same but fully electric, so the base of the car lies with the BMW iX1. The BMW iX2 is -like a lot of modern BMWs- dividing the opinions on its appearance. Some people like it and others … not so much. Guess which team we’re supporting! If BMW is playing it safe with the iX1, the iX2 is going LOCO! The front is very sporty and pretty big but can also be fitted with an optional luminous kidney grill. The false air intakes and sleek headlights are standard.

On the back, BMW loses all sense of reality. The car is like a shop on Black Friday—too busy! A large black spoiler, even more black parts on the bumper and elongated three-dimensional rear lights are just the start of this massive back-end. Back to the spoiler which has a purpose! Namely to guide the air coming off the sloping roofline. A distinctive design element.

But a good design element?

I’m not really sure about that with me measuring 1.83 meters (that is around 6 feet). You lose a lot of headroom thanks to this and yes, the boot space grows with 10 liters towards the iX1 -total: 525 liters-, but it’s less practical.

Moving to the front seat -the most important place to be- the BMW iX2 is still a car and not a PlayStation or laptop. Just like in the BMW iX1, we like the finish of the car. The seating position is great, the infotainment system is easy to use and has a clear resolution, the steering wheel is nice and chunky, and there is even a physical knob for the volume in the center console! Can it still get any better? Yes, it can! If you keep pushing the “set” button on the steering wheel for a few seconds, the annoying speed warning -which is mandatory by the EU- gets switched off.

xDrive30

The iX2 tries to look sporty, but the car is focused on comfort. A good choice, why would you choose a sporty crossover? The acceleration can be called fluent with its 313 horsepower hitting 100 kilometers in around 5.6 seconds. Pretty decent if you ask us. The iX2 is a BMW, so it still can take a corner if you want to!

More important is the consumption figure! With a full battery (64.8 kWh netto), the car was good for 350 kilometers (in winter) -WLTP: 449 kilometers- and around 18 kWh/100 km. That is pretty decent! Charging is possible with a speed of 11 kW or with a fast charger up to 130 kW. A lot of rivals in this price range will do that up to 150 kW.

Pricetag

The BMW iX2 is pretty unique in this market. The only thing that looks a little bit like the iX2 -so can be compared- is the Tesla Model Y and that’s a lot cheaper. Do you also know what is cheaper than this iX2, the iX1! But what does it cost? Well, the cheapest iX2 (eDrive20 204 hp and WLTP up to 478 kilometers) will set you back 51.450 euros (BE). Add 8.000 euros for our eDrive30, add 3.115 euros for the 20-inch multispoke rims, add 910 euros for the Utah Orange (we wouldn’t do that) and a few other options and you will end up with an iX2 costing you around 69.000 euros.

Conclusion

We wouldn’t buy the BMW iX2, but that’s purely thanks to the looks. The technology, the comfort and the driving dynamics are all on a very high level. But so are those things in the BMW iX1, our choice. A person who buys this car instead of an iX1 is a person who likes the styling and doesn’t mind paying a little bit extra for just that styling. And you can’t argue about style!
