A six-cylinder AMG GT… Who saw this coming? I didn’t, but that has to do with deliberate ignorance. Yes I wrote “deliberate” there on purpose as it comes down to something we all knew was going to happen with a 4-door version of the AMG GT: it would become a cashcow to the fullest extend. This new ‘entry-level AMG GT’ draws in a willing crowd with a 6-inline instead of the standard V8. But his may all be a good thing…

For longer than 2 decades, Audi has been offering two flavors of performance in its lineup with the S- and RS-models. BMW joined recently by branding and developing the M-Performance lineup. Mercedes-AMG has an ambivalent relation with sub-V8 cars though. In the beginning of this millennia they did offer an AMG 32. It kind of stopped there until a few years back when we had the 45-models, which quickly became the AMG 43-models and now we have the AMG 53-models. All wearing AMG badges, these models offer performance below that of the infamous AMG 63-models (not to mention their V12 cars). But the brand has never before launched their flagship with 2 engine options. Nor the SLS or SLR ever came in two very different flavors.
The six-cylinder AMG GT is down on power, down of performance and barely down on weight compared to the GT 63 S. The looks differ too, be it mildly visible. And yet this car seems far more attractive to me than the top version. Nearly 650 Hp and 900 Nm are something that probably frustrate me half the year round. Why? Because of what this car is: you can’t use that much power in a daily like this. Unless you want a divorce before the warranty wears off. Enter the 425 HP, six-cylinder AMG GT, your ‘not so crazy daily’.
Best thing about this car is the way it offers buyers a new argument to convince their spouses: “It’s not the V8 model, honey.”
