McLaren’s baby supercar has been on the market for 2 years now but it was still missing a topless companion. That’s about to change according to Mike Flewitt as the 570S Spider is set to release this year.
In an interview with Autocar, McLaren Automotive’s boss Mike Flewitt confirmed that a topless version of the 570S called the 570S Spider is ready for its debut this year. Flewitt didn’t want to confirm anything else other than the car having the same metal folding roof like the 650S spider.
When asked about a possible 540C Spider, Flewitt said the following:
“With the 540C, by the time you add options it can cost the same as a 570S, which is why we only offer it in certain markets,” Flewitt said. “And because of that it doesn’t make sense to do a 540C Spider. There will never be a 540 GT either.”
Power would remain the same coming from the 3.8L twin-turbo V8 producing 570 hp and 600 Nm’s of torque. Rigidity will remain the same thanks to McLaren’s well designed carbon fibre tub. The only added weight will be that of the folding roof mechanism which is about 40 kg’s. Not that big of a deal if the coupé only weighs 1.450 kg’s.
Mike Flewitt told that the 570S Spider will be released this year but it’s still unaware where or when. We’re placing our betts on the IAA Frankfurt Motorshow.
