Our Colleague Nick is the numbers-guy, but even I can solve this sum. A 575 horsepower supercharged V8, and an ‘eargasm-exhaust’ minus a roof = instant love. And yes, Nick double-checked that equation.
Even when this wasn’t a numbers game, the Jaguar F-Type R Convertible makes sense. That engine just adds to the feeling the F-Type already provided. Not as a hardcore sports car, but as a comfortable and crazy fast Grand Tourer. That’s why we have put more than 1.600 km on the clock in just 5 days. You could say we have tested it thoroughly and if you will not say it. My wallet did!
We have mentioned it in our review of the Range Rover Sport SVR, we did so in the one of the Jaguar F-Type R P575 Coupe and boy, did we like the Range Rover Velar SVAD! All of those cars had one joint factor! That lovely, thirsty, torquey, and “sweet sound-producing” supercharged V8. Probably a dying breed, that really needs to be celebrated every time you can.
And celebrated we did! The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 produces the same power and torque as in its fixed-roof sister, being 575 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque that is sent to all the four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Enough to get the 1,8-ton weighing convertible in 3.7 seconds to 100 km/h and to keep it pulling until you hit 300 km/h. All of that while you can enjoy that beautiful exhaust sound, even more, thanks to the convertible roof that opens and closes up to a speed of 50 km/h and will take around 12 seconds to do so. For the extra trilling sound, you can shift gears on your own and keep the revs around 3.000 rpm. You can thank us later.
The engine completes the car in a way Mila Kunis completes Ashton Kutcher. It looks like is meant to be. Don’t classify the Jaguar F-Type Convertible as a hardcore sports car and if you do, there are some better alternatives. Yes, you can put it in a corner at a pretty high speed and come out of it with your stomach in another place, but you can feel it’s not his priority. Classify the Jaguar F-Type Convertible as a wicked fast Grand Tourer with the capacity to put a big smile on your and everyone’s face. Roof: down, sunglasses: on, exhaust: loud, and destination: Saint-Tropez.
You know the way?
Saint-Tropez, here we come! If you can find it! Because there is no way you will be able to see the navigation instructions on the center console. This thanks to the sun, the angle of the screen, and not the greatest brightness. Furthermore, no complaints in our Jaguar F-Type R P575 Convertible.
It just starts when you want to get into the car. The door handle, so cool. We love the clean look! Then getting into the car and being cuddled by such great seats and inhaling the sportscar feeling (even do it’s a GT). Sitting low, looking over the immense hood while you are feeling or touching the leather and quality interior. It feels en looks great everywhere your eyes take you, except that middle infotainment screen cause you can’t see that much.
People could complain about the new F-Type having -almost- the same interior as the previous model. We don’t! It’s clean, it works and it’s easy to use! It also has got headed and cooled seats and a digital dashboard. Do you want anything else? More arguments? Okay, we have 2! Do you complain about the Porsche 911 always being the same and with a facelift -yes, it’s a facelift (a major one)- it is custom not to change too much on the interior. Thank you.
Yes, it is a facelift
But Team CJ, the car looks completely different than before! Are you sure it’s just a facelift? Yes, this model is “just” a facelift. A thorough facelift, but a facelift never the less. Those changes will have a lot of opponents, but as much of people who will like the new styling of the Jaguar F-Type Convertible. For me, it takes some getting used to!
That ain’t because I don’t like the new styling of this one, but we just adore the styling of the old. In the front, the grille sits lower while the headlights -Pixel LED- are sharper and flatter with LED day running lights giving it a more sportscar-look -maybe that’s the reason for us. Looking at the car from the side and you’ll just think the same as Team CJ. “Mmmm, the styling of the Coupe is nicer” and “No f*cking way, that’s red!” But yes, that brown-ish is SVO Premium Palette Red or in other words: the nightmare of every color-blind person.
At the back, the LED-taillights and little spoiler -that comes and goes on command or at a certain speed- are cool, and those four exhaust-tips are just so freaking awesome. It doesn’t only let people know you have the big boy but are so cosmetically correct!
Did we like it?
I loved the new Jaguar F-Type R Convertible. Jaguar is offering something unique on the market by looking at it in their own way. We have to encourage that! I’m getting a bit old and I still like the looks of the old one just a tad more. Either way, if you get one, new or old. You won’t be disappointed.
