Recently, Bavaria Motors asked me if I wanted to drive one of their cars as a publicity car in Gent-Wevelgem. Without being aware of what car I’d be driving, I accepted this unique opportunity. Turns out I’d be driving a Porsche 911 991.1 GT3 RS! As a huge Porsche-fan, I was extremely excited to drive this track-focused monster myself. During the cycling race, I passed my camera to Sinag, who joined me as copilot.
The greatest race in Flanders field since 1934
Gent-Wevelgem, or Gent-Wevelgem – In Flanders field, is a cycling race that was first held in 1934. Eventhough it’s called a “sprinters classic” due it’s flat finishing terrain, the cyclists are most likely to be tested by wind and rain due it’s early-season date. Fortunately this was not the case this year, on the contrary, the sun was shining and the temperatures were pleasing.
Driving in front of a cycling race is one of the most stressful jobs I’ve ever done. Knowing that the cyclists are only a few minutes behind and the fact you need to keep up with the leading cars requires some serious concentration for a few hours. Thousands of people are watching, so making a mistake would be a nightmare! Due the fact we needed to keep up with the first the cars, I had to push the GT3 RS a few times. Fortunately I didn’t had to stick to the traffic rules!
Track-focused road car
Sunday afternoon, the sun was shining and the roads were almost empty. After driving Gent-Wevelgem, I took some quality time with the 991.1 GT3 RS.
I’ve never driven any other generation of the GT3 RS before, but I’m convinced the 991.1 is a lot easier to drive than it’s older generations. The 991.1 GT3 RS is fitted with a 4.0 liter flat-6 derived from the 3.8 liter 991.1 Carrera S with a dual-glutch gearbox. Even though I’m a bit of a purist, I kinda like the fact that 991.1 GT3 RS is fitted with PDK, it’s still a road car after all. The PDK makes it possible to drive the car very smooth into the city and on the other hand, the PDK Sport ensures that the car wants to be pushed on track. Ready to go flat out. The Porsche 991.1 GT3 RS makes a perfect “Track-focused road car” -that can even be used as a daily-, but it’s almost too easy to drive.
Compared to the older generations GT3 RS’s, the 991.1 doesn’t borrow the bodywork of it’s same generation Porsche Carrera, but it does borrow it from the same-gen Porsche Turbo. Those hips don’t lie! Underneath those wide rear-arches are equipped the same tires as from the Porsche 918 Spyder! Besides that the Porsche 991.1 is fitted with an all new aero-package that includes a splitter, a bigger wing and air vents on the front arches, which all increases the downforce. And last but not least, the Porsche 991.1 GT3 RS came with rear-wheel steering , which allows the car to corner faster.
I finally can checkmark my first Porsche, and I hope a lot more of them will cross my path!
