Sunday morning, you wake up early in the morning. While watching the sun rise, you pour yourself a cup of coffee, wondering what you will do later that day. You go outside and you feel the pleasant temperature for the first time and all you can think of is getting your oldtimer back on the road, after a long and cold winter. That’s exactly what Saens, Sinag and I did! We drove the Austin-Healey to the Belgian “Kluisbos”, and god, it was so enjoyable!

Some facts

The Austin-Healey 100-6 BN4 Roadster 2+2 isn’t the shortest name you’ve seen for a car. But what does it mean? The Austin-Healey 100-6 was the successor to the Austin-Healey 100 and the predecessor to the Austin-Healey 3000. Together they are known as the “Big Healeys”.
The 100-6 had a longer wheelbase than it’s predecessor, a more powerful straight-6 engine and had 4 seats, which later became optional. The Austin-Healey 100-6 came in 2 models, in 1956 the BN4 2+2 (4 seater) and in 1958-1959 the BN6 2 seater.

A perfect sunday drive

Last sunday, My brother texted me to ask if I wanted to write about the Austin-Healey which is currently for sale at Bavaria Motors. I didn’t hesitate and told him I wanted to take it to The Flemish Ardennes, more specific “Het kluisbos”. On the way, I joined him as a pleasant passenger. We drove the beautiful roads and hunted down the most magnificent locations The Flemish Ardennes offers. A vintage car wouldn’t be vintage if something did not broke down. After a few bumpy roads, the fuel gauge died. To make sure we would make it home that evening, we made a quick stop at the gas station. Besides that, also the turn signals broke down not that much later. But hey, the engine still runs after almost 60 years!

After a few shots, it was finally my turn to step behind the steering wheel of this Austin-Healey. I was excited for this very moment as I never drove an oldtimer before. The first thing that really caught my attention was that you need long legs and short arms to drive this car. But after only a few minutes, I got used to it. In fact, it is really easy to drive and it handles quite fast. While modern supercars are all about numbers and performance, driving a Healey nowadays is all about the feeling, charms and predilection for the old fashion engineering. You can drive this car in 2 different ways, you can either push the throttle and let the straight-6 grunt. Or you can drive it like a real gentleman at a speed of 50km/h. Both are very enjoyable and feel sporty. Besides that you have a very open feeling while driving, so you can enjoy the sun and the landscapes to the fullest.

I didn’t know what to expect of this Austin-Healey, But it didn’t take long to fall in love with the car. Even I prefered to drive it straight to my garage, with pain in the heart I handed over the keys at the end of the day.
